Coming soon I’ll be teaching a new workshop series on stand-up comedy. There will be two levels offered: Beginning and Advanced. They will each be 6 to 8 weeks long and I’ll be teaching them at Westlake Acting Studio.
We’re still working on the Advanced course description, but it’s main goal will be to assist you in preparing a solid 6 minute comedy set that you’ll perform on stage in front of a live audience on the final night of class. Here is the syllabus for the Beginning level course:
BEGINNING STAND-UP CLASS SYLLABUS
Week #1 – Good Evening Ladies & Gentlemen
- Improv: Technique to strengthen physical comedy
- Theory: Intro to the world of stand-up comedy – the life of the comic
- Writing: Anatomy of a joke
Week #2 – The Line-Up
- Improv: Technique to strengthen associations
- Theory: Creating comedy filters and topical references
- Writing: Lists
Week #3 – Comedy Goggles
- Improv: Technique to strengthen thinking on your feet
- Theory: Continuing filtering events-looking at things from other perspectives
- Writing: People, places and things
Week #4 – What A Joke
- Improv: Technique to strengthen story building
- Theory: Figuring out what hits home
- Writing: The story joke
Week #5 – Which Way Did They Go?
- Improv: Technique strengthen trust in your instincts
- Theory: Diagraming
- Writing: Zig Zag
Week #6 – That’s Just Like When…
- Improv: Technique to strengthen thinking outside of the box
- Theory: Making random things make sense
- Writing: Comparisons and similarities
Week #7 – Tag, You’re It!
- Improv: Technique to strengthen your view of the world
- Theory: Assembling a routine from disparate jokes

- Field trip to a real comedy show
